Inner West Women's Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service

With an emphasis on prevention of injury and mental health problems, this service is provided specifically to assist women and their children who are victims of domestic violence who attend Burwood Court for Apprehended Violence Orders (AVO).

The service provides direct aid in the way of support for women who are distressed (i.e. can stay with the women in the courtroom), and relieves some of the trauma created by issues surrounding domestic violence and the legal court system. Clients are supported in the process of obtaining an Apprehended Violence Order and follow-up support can also be provided at the clients’ request.

The range of support provided includes information on how the court system works, referrals regarding legal aid and guidance on the specific resources available for victims of domestic violence and how to access them. In-house referrals may be to the Inner West Family Support Service, Inner West Counselling Service and Emergency Financial Relief.
